South African comedian and TV host Trevor Noah hosted the 2025 Grammys for the 5th time. His opening monologue was full of his usual jokes but one about illegal immigrants misfired and he got roasted online. The moment where Doechii rolled her eyes has gone viral and many are calling him out.
The Controversial Joke That Sparked Outrage
During his opening monologue Trevor Noah said:
“Tonight we’ll be honouring the best in music as voted on by 13,000 members of the Recording Academy and 20 million illegal immigrants. And tonight no matter what happens history will be made.”
Doechii’s Eye Roll
Doechii looked unimpressed in the background. The moment has gone viral. Many are loving Doechii’s face and hating the joke.
Netizens React to Trevor Noah’s Joke
The joke sent the internet into a frenzy, with many calling out Noah for his comment and relating to Doechii’s response. Here’s what some netizens had to say:

The backlash shows how sensitive the topic is especially with everything that’s going on in the US.
Trevor Noah Rips Trump’s Policies
Later in the show, Noah didn’t hold back on the Trump administration. He said: “There’s been a few changes in Washington. So, I’m gonna enjoy tonight because this may be the last time I get to host anything in this country.”
This was a reference to the reported deportations of undocumented immigrants being carried out by the Trump administration. He also hit on tariffs and immigration.
Trevor Noah’s Monologue
From the 2025 Grammys at the Crypto.com Arena in LA:
On the Grammys:
“Welcome to music’s biggest night. And when I say biggest, I mean biggest nights. What the Super Bowl is to the NFL. What Valentine’s Day is to romance. What Father’s Day is to Nick Cannon. That’s what the Grammys is to music.”
On Shakira:
While mentioning Shakira, Noah joked that she is “the greatest thing out of Colombia that isn’t a class A felony,” further mocking the illegal immigration issue.
On Beyoncé’s Tour and Trump’s Tariffs:
Noah quipped about Beyoncé’s upcoming tour and Trump’s new tariffs, saying:
“I will say, though Beyoncé. There’s tariffs. We can’t afford a new tour, right? Maple syrup is about to be $50.”

Backlash Against Trump’s Immigration Policies
Trevor Noah isn’t the only public figure to address the controversial mass deportations under the Trump administration. Earlier in January 2025, Pope Francis called the policy a “disgrace,” stating:
“If true, this will be a disgrace, because it makes the poor wretches who have nothing pay the bill… This won’t do! This is not the way to solve things. That’s not how things are resolved.”
Similarly, Selena Gomez took to her Instagram Story to express her distress over the situation. In a now-deleted video, she was seen crying and saying:
“I just wanna say I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked. The children, I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
After facing backlash, Gomez replaced the post with another story that read:
“Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.” This too was later removed.

Trump’s Immigration Crackdown
In the first few weeks of his presidential post, Donald Trump has focused a central focus on immigration. Reports suggest that ICE (immigration and customs enforcement) make collective arrests of non -driven migrants, including shrine cities such as Chicago and San Francisco. According to Radar Online, the Trump administration has allegedly asked the ice to increase the daily arrest from a few hundred to 1,200-1 500.
